We have added this section in response to "Could you explain the difference between all believers are urged to prophesy and the office gift of Prophet to the Church?" The following is a brief article concerning the subject. We are all called to display the Fruits of the Spirit, which comes from the application of His Gifts by way of Holy Spirit. We are all, those willing servants who wish to be included, able to display all the Fruits and Gifts if and when He desires; even in Old Testament times God singled out some to display such power. If we ask He will not refuse; plus, we are His servants, able to do all things when He calls on us to do them. I liken it to a Holy tool belt which came fully equipped with tools. We mostly never need all the tools at once, no more than a woodworker would try to use a hammer to shape a delicate piece instead of a saw or knife and so on. Some of us are chosen to be used in one office while others may occasionally be needed in that same office, in a temporary setting; there is or should not be a challenge to the one who is truly called as a prophet when another prophesies. To be classed as a Prophet from God is an awesome thing indeed, they must always be right 100% of the time and are indicating that the Lord has spoke thus and such to His people. However, prophesying is also simply proclaiming, saying, the word of God out loud to His people. You, we, do this when we read the Bible, His Word, out loud; in fact we do this anytime we give our testimony about God, whether two minutes or two hours, and it shall not come back void (unless it is from the flesh). Furthermore, God says He wants to save all people, there is only one whom He doesn't wish to save, Satan. This is the same God who issues, would that all prophesy; and in fact, speaking of when we shall all be changed, we will be all those things that we are not now... Holy in all the ways that God intends us to become... even finally like Jesus. But, for now we can only be as He directs us to be through the Gifts; and, when He wants us to be what we are called to be at a particular time and place He will equip us for that task. I know people whom God has chosen to use in a healing ministry; does that mean that every time that person prays a healing happens and that no one else ought to pray for others in that church for a healing? Never let it be, for we truly are all called to do whatever He bids us to do, whenever He bids us... are we not? This business of the Gifts is not a difficult thing to understand, except that it is a mystery in itself; if we view it from our worldly insight we are easily confused. It is simple when we accept that everything we receive is a gift and does not belong to us, thus we must say, when speaking of our Gifts, if ever we are bold enough to do so, "It is not my doing, it is the Lord." There has often been confusion when a peoples have been taught about the Gifts and the offices that come out of them; but, it generally all can be attributed to the lack of true understanding or teaching. They, the Gifts, are not ours but belong to Holy Spirit. You receive the Gifts that you may build up the Body of Christ, the Church (the people), not buildings (though buildings can be the result too, however, they are not the primary purpose). The one thing one mustn't do is try to muster up a Gift when God has not called for it to be used by you or at that particular time; that would be tantamount to being like Simon the Magician and all manner of problems will develop from that approach. Like an apple tree straining to produce a watermelon. And, always remember that it is He who is anointing you to speak or for the use of the Gift and that He is a God of order not confusion. If you for instance feel God has particularly anointed you with the Gift of Healing and you go into a meeting of saints where someone is laying hands on people for healing, you are not suppose to run up and stop what is happening and say, you forgot to wait for me. God anoints who He chooses when He chooses and we, if we are called in like manner, must either sit back of wait until He calls us forward for service or pray in silence knowing God anoints our prayers even where we sit. It is simple when we follow His leading and not that of our flesh, our sinful nature. So... if you are a servant of God be ready always to do His will, and even if He requires you to prophesy before the congregation or to the world... know that Holy Spirit will increase in you what He has already given you... the Gift of Prophesy.
