 Hearing God

I remember reading about a man who heard God say stop! He pulled over to the side of the road. Afterward he came to a terrible wreck. There were many deaths. The man asked God why didn't he stop them too. God answered him, saying He had, they didn't listen.

I have heard of many instances where things like this has happened, and I'm sure we could all say the same thing about instances when we have truly heard God.

I once felt Holy Spirit say close your windows.  I was driving my old truck without air-conditioning so I said to myself, yeah right.

Did I mention it was raining cats and dogs and it was hot.  I had my windows mostly up to keep from getting wet, but boy was I hot and stuffy.

I felt again, close your windows.  Then  again the same words close your windows, so I did.  No sooner did I close them than a big truck hit a giant puddle enveloping my truck, dousing every aspect with red muddy water.

Boy was I glad I listened.  Not so great a story as avoiding a wreck, but it works for me... I listened.

It is said that Feeling is the voice of the body, while Reason is the voice of the soul or mind, while Conscience is the voice of the spirit.

So how do we hear God?

Only you and God know the answer to that question; but if you do not listen, how will you ever know?

If you want to know more, read on.

Hearing God
Robbie L. Rogers

Acts 10:34-43 "Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.  You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

God's will, will be done.

What we consider good or bad are of no consequences, for all things fall in two categories, either God allowed or God ordained.  It is only up to us to continue to have faith or not.  Is that not right?

I wish I could give you a great and grand method or formula for hearing God, but I can't.  I too have difficulty in knowing for sure. Oh sure I can receive a revelation through God's word, and most often teachings and writings from God, which is a lot, I'm not complaining mind you.  It's the part about hearing God as to His Will about something, like a new job, buying a car, a house or the course you should travel on vacation, then going and doing in faith. That's where I have trouble.  I seem to fear I'm in there leading  God instead of Him leading me.  Do you know what I mean?

How do you hear God?

"Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism..."

I recently read you must, diverse yourself from the world and its influences before you can hear.  I've done that and receive things, but how do I know they are from God?  Sure you can test them, but if you are in the right ball park. In your own life aren't you liable to put your two cents in instead?  Come on admit it.  You want to hear God give you His marching orders too.  Who wants to guess about what God wants?

Luke 11:9-13 "And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

This scripture tells us to seek and you shall find, knock and it will be opened to you. The word seek means to go and search, to take great pains to find, to strive for.  I've done that and I'm sure you have too; but that is all part of hearing God.  Did you know the Bible essentially is a manual for living and knowing God.  Think about it... if you want to really know who God is and what He represents today pray, read, and study the Bible.

I have often said, we must not remain tied to the dock unless God so demands it. Instead we have to move out in faith after asking God.

Have you ever been out in a boat at night.  It's beautiful when the stars are bright and the moon is shinning, you can see for miles.  Lights shine bright along the shore too, you can pick out places you know and head for them, places to fish or places of safety are easy to find; but, what about relying on God to direct us when its stormy with the wind howling and nothing looks familiar?  What if it is so foggy you see nothing except the boat you are in.  I'll tell you what happens, you become lost.  You know, sometimes life has a way of falling apart and taking us with it... doesn't it?.

James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."

Even if we find ourselves upon the rocks, we must have faith that God put us there, like Paul when he was shipwrecked.

Open your heart to the Holy Spirit, allow Him to be your helper.  Jesus promised He would be! "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Eliminate the day to day distractions, in your prayer time if you are seriously asking for God to guide you. Turn off your music, clocks ticking, or whatever distracts you. Turn the lights off if need be. Talk to God, your Father, for you have been adopted as Jesus' brother.

You can pray without ceasing by continually speaking to God in prayer no mater what you do; but, don't pray on the fly about the important things you are truly seeking.

Whenever you pray, go to your room, close the door, and pray in private.  Don't be impatient with your hearing, God has had patience with you.

Don't allow Satan  intervene, demand in the name of Jesus that he be gone from your room.  Then allow silence to overtake you, take your Bible and paper to write on and listen to your heart.

Be still, become the child, trusting completely, be conscious of who you are waiting for. God, the supreme power of the universe, your Father, Your friend.   Let Him in your room, invite Him. Tell Him how important He is and important what He has to say about the subject you are asking is.  After having asked, know that He is present.

Let the Holy Spirit be one with you and your thoughts.  Become aware of the gifts given to you at Baptism: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.  Become dependent on them no matter where you are, especially in prayer.

Wisdom enable us to know how to use the gifts.

Understanding enlightens us, removes confusion.

Counsel enables us to know how to listen and act on His prompting.

Fortitude gives us disciple, strength, and faith to do what we must.

Knowledge allows us to see as God.

Piety helps us to learn to love being in the presence of God.

Fear enables us to love the Lord so much that we fear not doing His will.

John 16:13,14  "When he, the Spirit of truth comes, he shall receive mine, and shall show it unto you. He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to you."

Hearing God is one of the most important things we can do as Christians.   Jesus promises, we will, so we must train ourselves for the race.
